Contest Champion

Alex Bach
MakeaStar.com Champion
Contest Round Ending 09/30/2001

Alex Bach describes her music as “pop with an attitude.” Bach was born in France, raised there and then later in Abu Dhabi, Germany, and finally, the U.S. She grew up speaking French and Arabic, and in quick succession, picked up English, German and then Spanish. While Alex may be heard singing in any language, her emotional and evocative songs speak of life in its most personal and honest form. Steve Coulter conducted this interview via e-mail.

MakeaStar.com:
Welcome to the finals. Did you ever think you would get this far?

Alex Bach: I have always believed in the power of positive thinking!

MAS: What do you think it is about your song that it has gotten into the finals?

A.B.: I think "Anymore" explores the aftermath of relationships in a very positive manner, and people often find comfort in knowing that there can be happiness after a breakup.

MAS: Have you been getting any e-mail from fans?

A.B.: Yes, and I make it a point to answer each one personally. After all, wanting to reach people is the whole reason I became a musician in the first place!

MAS: What is the response to your song and your sound in general?

A.B.: The response has been nothing short of amazing.  I have gotten letters from people in Korea, Japan, Switzerland, Australia.  It's a thrill to know that my music is being heard and enjoyed around the world

MAS: What do you think about MakeaStar.com's Industry review service? What about the equal voting power being given to Fans and the Industry in the contests?

A.B.: The Review is an invaluable way to get constructive criticism from experts.  Their comments have really helped me to evaluate what I should keep and what I should change about my music.

The equal voting power is indicative of the new wave of thinking that is sweeping over the music business; I think the Internet is bringing the power back to the people.  We no longer have to depend solely upon what the radio and TV want to show us.  We can explore unlimited (free) music from other countries and never leave our chairs.

MAS: How did you develop your sound?

A.B.: My sound is as eclectic as I am.  Having grown up around the world, I was influenced by many cultures and I became open-minded to different ideasI write all my songs-- words and melodies.  Sometimes I work with instrumentalists, and I always give credit where it is justly due (such as the guitar riffs for "Anymore".

MAS: Any influences you care to mention? What have other people compared you to?

A.B.: Johnny Mercer and Fiona Apple taught me how to write lyrics; I learned about melodies from Sarah  McLachlan and Joni Mitchell.  And I started on guitar by learning how to play Jewel's songs. Every time someone compares me to another (well-known) artist, I am flattered that they would even consider me on the same level as other great musicians.

MAS: What do you think sets you apart from other artists in your genre?

A.B.: I consider myself to be the "Anti-Diva." I try to treat everyone with respect and courtesy, and I am extremely grateful for all my blessings.

MAS: It’s obvious that your recorded material is great, but how about your live show?

A.B.: Oh, I am really more of an entertainer than I am a "singer."   My shows are 200% better than my demos because I can interact with the audience on a more intimate level.

MAS: Are you playing anywhere anytime soon?

A.B.: I have 3 shows this weekend, including a benefit concert for the WTC victims. Check out my Calendar page on www.mp3.com/alexbach for a constant update on my upcoming shows.

MAS: Have you released your music already?

A.B.: I have an 8-song CD available thru my MP3 page, but I am as of yet still unsigned.

MAS: Where would you like to see your music take you?

A.B.: All the way, Baby!!

MAS: How realistic is that goal in terms of the immediate future?

A.B.: My management is already negotiating with a couple of record labels, so I would say there's a very good chance you'll be seeing more of me in the future.

MAS: What one band would you like to follow in the footsteps of down the road to success?

A.B.: I'm not picky - I'll follow any band down the road of success!!
